Follicular Unit Extraction in Washington, DC

Located in Vienna, Younger Image Hair Transplant Clinic offers hair restoration using the follicular unit extraction (FUE) as an alternative to strip harvesting. Because the technique has several advantages over other harvesting techniques, we recommend follicular unit extraction to many of our hair restoration patients in and around Washington, DC, and Gaithersburg, Maryland.

What Is Follicular Unit Extraction?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a technique used to extract donor hair for hair restoration.  During the process, hair is extracted in small groups of one to four hairs at a time using a surgical punch or another device.  The donor follicles are then transplanted to areas where the hair is balding or thinning.  FUE has become a popular option since it produces natural looking results that follow a patient’s hair pattern.  Follicular unit extraction is less invasive than other hair restoration techniques and allows patients to be awake during the virtually painless procedure.

What Should I Expect From Follicular Unit Extraction?

Although follicular unit extraction is an intricate process for your surgeon and the staff who separates the follicles, the procedure is relatively easy for patients.  You will receive all pre and post-operative instructions before your surgery.  In some cases, hair will be shaved on your scalp to allow access to enough donor follicles.  You will be informed beforehand if this is the case for you.

After the procedure, you can return to work the next day, and you should heal within about a week.  When you first begin to see growth, remember that the transplanted hair shafts will most likely fall out.  Initial shedding is part of the hair transplant process and causes no reason for alarm.  Within three to four months, new growth will occur from the transplanted follicles.  It will take up to a year to see the full results.

What Should my Physician Explain to me About Follicular Unit Extraction?

Follicular unit extraction is best for patients who have mild to moderate hair loss.  The required graft areas for patients who have advanced hair loss are too large to perform the procedure efficiently.  Strip extraction is a better choice for advanced hair loss.  Follicular unit extraction is not ideal for patients who have had multiple previous hair transplants.  Because the scalp has a tendency to tighten during the healing process, safe and effective extraction of donor hair is challenging.

How Long Does It Take for Hair to Start Growing?

Patients who undergo hair transplants using follicular unit extraction begin to see hair growth around six months.  It usually takes up to a year to see the final result.

What Happens to the Areas Where Hair Follicles Are Extracted?

Scarring is minimal and almost imperceptible with follicular unit extraction.  Although a small hole is left after the surgery, healing contracts the skin around the hole and makes it practically invisible.

What Are the Advantages of Follicular Unit Extractions?

Follicular unit extraction has become a preferred hair transplant method because it offers the following advantages over other techniques:

Eliminates linear scarring – During FUE, 0.7 to 1.0 mm of hair follicle and the surrounding tissue are extracted in small circles.  Unlike strip extraction, no linear scarring occurs, making it possible to wear short hairstyles.

Reduces the recovery period – Because the grafts are tiny punched out holes, the wounds heal on their own without stitches.  Patients experience less discomfort and can return to work and other routine activities faster than they would be able to with more invasive procedures.

Gives more donor supply options – FUE allows doctors to extract donor hair from areas with viable hair follicles, including the scalp, chest, arms, and beard.

Allows graft selection – The FUE process allows surgeons to identify and select the best hair follicles to graft in appropriate places.  For example, finer single hair follicles can be placed on the hairline while thicker follicles can be placed on the crown.

Preferred for small or specialized areas – FUE is ideal when restoring hair in small areas such as the eyebrows.

Is FUE a Good Option for Me?

FUE is one of many available hair transplantation techniques performed today.  FUE works well for patients who like to wear their hair very short in the back, are concerned about scarring, or seek a short recovery period.  FUE is also a good option for patients who have limited donor supply or a scalp that is not overly elastic.  If you live in the Washington, DC, or Gaithersburg, Maryland area the best way to know for sure if FUE will work in your situation is by scheduling a consultation with a hair restoration specialist at the Younger Image Hair Restoration Clinic located in Vienna.
